A Case of Juxtacortical Osteogenic Sarcoma of the Upper Third of the fibula

Abstract
The lesion of bone originally described by Geschickter and Copeland in 1951 as parosteal osteoma is now generally recognized as a distinctive type of osteogenic sarcoma with characteristic clinical, roentgenographic and pathologic features.
Juxtacortical osteogenic sarcoma is the most widely accepted in the literature, that name is used here.
A case of Juxtacortical osteogenic sarcoma of the upper third of the left fibula is reported together with review of the literature. The involvement of the upper third of the left fibula is extres melt¢¥ rare.
A man, fifty-seven years oTd, for 3 years noticed intermittent swelling after vigorous exercise and subsiding after rest of the proximal part of the left leg.
A month prior to admission, this swelling became progressively larger. The presenting complataint was hard nonmovab~e, nontender and, lobulated large mass on the posterolateral aspect of the upper Bart of the left leg.
Roentgenographic examination revealed a peripheral diffuse soft tissue swelling and a central lobular osseous mass with distinct margin, dense shadow encircling the shaft and narrow radiolucent zone between the tumor and shaft below the osteosclerotic base on the posteromedial aspect of the upper third of the left fibula.
This patient had laboratory studies within normal limits. It is treated by segmental resection.
Histological finding revealed fibrosarcomatous pattern with more or less interlacing bundles of fibroblast-like cells and fibers and scattered mass of atypical cartilage tissue composed of atypical chondrocyt¢¥Cs with pleomorphic, hypochromatic and hyperchromatic nuclei, among which there were bone spicules.
